7 Blogging Tips for Starting a Blog & Nurturing it to Success

Raise your hand if you've ever started a blog that didn't make money, and eventually, you lost interest in it and began to ignore its existence. I feel pretty sure that is nearly everyone who has ever started a blog, or a business they wanted to do online. As a multipotentialite, I've lost count of how many times I've done it.

But on the other hand, have you ever written a blog post, had a few people comment, and found yourself having a wonderful conversation that helped you think through the topic you were blogging about & maybe even inspired a future blog post?

That experience is just an example of what can happen when you start a blog and begin to create success. But how do we nurture our blogs to the success we want most?

That's our focus, today...

blogging tips, start a successful blog, Genius Bloggers Toolkit

2 Questions You Need to Answer

The most important first step is to decide who your target market is and stay focused on writing just to your people. Who are your people?

Next, decide what your message is to them and how you want to help. Which problem will you solve for them?

This will form the foundation for your blog, so it must be clear to you whether you are writing your first blog post or your thousandth.

Take a moment now to see if you can articulate your blog's mission in one sentence. Who do you help, and what problem do you solve?

If you have a lifestyle blog, like I do, you may write about a variety of topics, just the way someone would who writes about business success.

But there needs to be something that ties it together. And you need to be able to communicate what it is.

Though there are several places on your blog where you can articulate these two messages - who you help & which problem you solve - like the sidebar, your about page, etc., make sure your blog posts remind them, too, so they stay clear.

7 Tips for Each Blog Post

Once you are clear on who you help and which problem you solve, it's time to create really good content in your blog posts. Make sure each post has these five elements...

(1) Images: add images to each post. You can create a title post, images to introduce different sections in your post, and to create space between long text passages.

People are more likely to read your post if they see images in addition to the writing.

(2) Reminders of how you help: your first post can be an "about this blog" post that lets your readers know what they can expect from your blog, and what your mission and message are. But, as I mentioned above, other blog posts also must sing that refrain & tell that story.

(3) Use your best keywords: find ways to include keywords related to the problem you solve, in your title, your section titles and your blog post content in general.

Do your best not to use them in ways that don't quite fit, because people will hear that as they read. Read your post back to yourself to make sure it feels like you are having a conversation with your tribe, not flinging keywords at them.

(4) Create cornerstone content: speaking of keywords, create longer, and more substantive blog posts that really speak too the work you do, that offer help, but also, point to ways they can work with you or be helped at a deeper level.

Those posts should be longer, and have your most important keywords. They also should have your unique point of view. If your people can find ten other good articles on the same topic, how can you make your own point of view clear?

How can you make the unique way you help a signpost that helps you stand out as uniquely suited to work with them? And which keywords can you use to let them know that you are calling their names, specifically?

(5) Make it the center of your online presence: your blog should be the center of what you do online. You definitely want to be active on social media, but your blog should be the hub and the social media platforms are more like spokes on a wheel.

(6) Always have a call-to-action: decide what you want them to do next after reading your post. You can suggest content upgrades that add cheat sheets, worksheets, etc., in exchange for their email addresses. Or you can point to another opt-in or a sale you have going on at the time.

(7) Share buttons: when your blog post is completed, share it on every social media platform you're using to get some exposure for it. And invite your readers to do the same.

Great post Jeanine. I wish I had this when I started blogging 10 years ago. It is encouraging to realize how much I have stayed true to my audience. Marriage is our passion and helping them not only survive, but thrive. I’ve linked to a recent post that gives a glimpse of what we do. Included in our focus is date night ideas.

Great tips, Jeanine. Thanks for providing valuable information. I think lots of people forget the Call to Action - as do I. I stick one in every now and then mainly because I don't want all my posts to be salesy. Eydie :)

Eydie, I know what you mean! I sometimes forget, too. And I try to avoid being salesy, myself, but then I have to watch for not telling people what I offer that they might need and want to know about, so it's a balance. I hope I stay on the right side of it.

Great post, with so much information. I've run both 'hobby blogs' and 'money blogs'. The approach is certainly very different. Great advice here for those who want to nurture a new or existing blog to long-term success.

Wonderful Jeanine, I have read many how-to passages on Wordpress or other blogging sites but you pulled it all together and made it understandable. I am making a hard copy so I can refer to it. Bravo!

What a super informative post Jeanine! My blog is more of a lifestyle blog also, I love to write positive posts and of course many about my family. I'm so excited to have both my granddaughter (Alex's Articles) and great granddaughter (Lia's Likings The Baby Blogger) join in with me and blogging! I went through my blogs to try to come up with the most interesting and it's hard to do! I decided to share my 6 month Healing Eating Update. I'm ready to write a 9 month update soon and happy to say I'm still on target! http://themarthareview.com/six-month-healthy-eating-update/
